Conversations about employing people with disabilities often begin with a list of legal reasons why it “cannot be done”. I expected Agnieszka Fedor, an employment lawyer, to lengthen the list. Instead, she broke it down into policies, documentation, health and safety, working-time rules and the flow of personal data. What had been a list of fears became an implementation checklist.
“Will legal allow it?” is a convenient question. “We're still checking” has neither an owner nor a deadline. The useful questions are less comfortable: which documents need review, who approves working conditions, who prepares the manager and who supports the team after the hire? The law cannot do that work for the company. Nor should it be an elegant name for a missing decision while the cost of inaction continues to accrue. This conversation is dated; always check the current rules separately.
